Fishermen on the Ganga

Fishermen on the heavily polluted Ganga (or Ganges) river at Varanasi, India. The local time is 6 am and the city is slowly coming alive. People are bathing, brushing their teeth and drinking the river water along the banks. Nearby is a “ghat” where human bodies are burnt for three hours. The remains and the ashes are thrown into the river. Bodies of pregnant women, people with deceases and children under 10 years old are not burnt but sunk with a stone. Locals told me one of the reasons is so that fish can feed on them. I think of these fishermen and this short circle of life.
